Brindisi Rosso Vigna Flaminio 2009

Writing in the Daily Telegraph Victoria Moore recommends this wine, which she wrote is “from Italy’s heel, and full of the exuberance of the warm south”.

She added that the wine is “reminiscent of mulberries, with an edge of sour cherries. Made from Negroamaro, it’s smooth and easy-going with a sweet ripeness that, if you are having a pizza, is extra delicious if you fry some red onions and add them to the topping with some chilli and fatty salami.”

Castello di Potentino Piropo IGT Toscana

This “best buy” is the first of the wines for a cellar, recommended by David Williams in The Observer, and he labelled it.

He wrote: “An unusual blend of Pinot Noir with the Chianti grape variety Sangiovese and a little of the unheralded Alicante from a British expat winemaker, this beautiful Tuscan red is alive with cherry fruit and fresh herbs now, but it could mellow and soften still more over the next half a decade."

2010 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano

In the Chicago Tribune, Bill St John features Vino Nobile di Montepulciano which, he writes, “sweeps the Tuscan trifecta: It’s all, or predominantly, made of the great grape Sangiovese; it’s terrific with food; and it’s Tuscan.”

In regards to this wine, he wrote: “True to the winery’s aim, this all-Sangiovese Vino Nobile offers up gobs of pretty, bright red fruit aromas and tastes, with subtle grace notes of wood, menthol and balsamic; tangy acidity and soft tannins have an eye on food of many stripes; great price for all it gives.”

Brezza Barbera d’Alba Santa Rosalia 2010 Piemonte

Victoria Moore, in the Daily Telegraph, recommends this wine, writing that “these reds are as gentle as chiffon.”

She added: “The tannin that gives them bones and structures feels as if it has been hand-stitched with a tiny, fine-pointed needle. The Barbera would light up any evening.”
